Deep tissue massage
Deep tissue massage uses slower, firmer strokes to reach deeper layers of muscle and is often chosen for tight shoulders, back and legs.
What it is
A firmer style that uses slow strokes and sustained pressure, often with the forearms, knuckles or elbows, to work on deeper muscle layers and connective tissue.
What to expect
Pressure is stronger than a relaxation massage and some tenderness is normal. Good therapists check in with you and ease off if the pressure is too much. It should not be sharply painful.
What to ask before booking
Say which areas are tight, how much pressure you prefer, and whether you have injuries, bruise easily or take blood-thinning medication. Ask a health professional first if you are unsure it suits you.
